What and when did you study at INSEAD?
I completed my EMBA at INSEAD in December 2017, graduating from the Singapore campus. It was a whirlwind experience, as I was constantly flying back and forth between Fontainebleau, Singapore and Brisbane.
Tell us about your career journey to date.
My journey in the energy sector spans over two decades, starting well before I completed my EMBA at INSEAD. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in various roles across the globe, from the oil fields of the North Sea to the energy markets of Paris and Jakarta. Each step brought new experiences, whether it was managing gas projects in Australia or partnering on innovative energy solutions. After years of leading teams and navigating complex projects, I’ve now embraced the flexibility of freelance consulting, where I continue to contribute to the industry’s ever-evolving landscape.
How did you end up in this part of the world?
I was born in South Africa and moved to London with my family during my childhood, where I lived until graduate and post-graduate studies took me to Belgium, France and the USA. In 2011, my role at Total brought me to Brisbane, Australia. What was initially a work assignment turned into a long-term move, and I’ve now called Brisbane home for the past 13 years. The city’s great climate, vibrant energy sector and my network here have made it a fantastic place to live and work.
How did INSEAD transform your life?
When I applied to INSEAD, after spending 17 years at Total, I was seeking a new direction and fresh challenges. The EMBA program was a unique experience that brought together a diverse group of individuals from various industries and regions. This blend was both inspiring and eye-opening. INSEAD not only helped me to see myself and the world from a different lens, but also connected me to a valuable global network. Before INSEAD, entrepreneurship was an idea I had considered but hadn’t fully pursued. The EMBA program not only broadened my perspective but also opened up new professional opportunities that I might not have explored otherwise. Over the past six years since completing the program, I’ve had the opportunity to become a Loyal VC advisor, a partner of INSEAD, and engage in startup projects in Tunisia and Australia.
What are you passionate about?
Well, I’m quite the enthusiast when it comes to food—my passion for it started back in high school when my classmates and I formed a Cooking Club. It turns out I’m not just a foodie; I’m a bit of a culinary adventurer. I love exploring new places and sharing my gastronomic discoveries with anyone who will listen. On a more professional note, I could chat about the energy industry for hours. It’s a field that truly captivates me, and I’m always eager to delve into its latest developments and innovations.
