1. Let's spread the word on Climate Hero

Welcome back to fall, INDEVORites.  We have been heartened over the summer to see the numbers mounting to more than 2,250 participants joining in the INSEAD ClimateHero Initiative, to further enhance the awareness around climate change. Thank you, if you already participated; We still need more to join in order to change the game.  Could you please help promote it with classmates and friends on your WhatsApp groups, NAA & GC newsletters and other channels? Please find below a draft text that you can share with your communities.

INSEAD invites everyone to be better informed about their personal carbon footprints. Therefore, please join the INSEAD ClimateHero Initiative. Thank you to those who already participated.

It only takes 5 minutes to calculate your carbon footprint, which offers you many benefits:

  • Learn: Get a detailed breakdown of your environmental impact. The calculator provides specific, actionable recommendations to reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Improve: Consider the suggested changes in ways that fit your lifestyle and schedule. Every small, informed step contributes to significant reductions in carbon emissions.
  • Compete: INSEAD tracks participation by country and cohort. Spread the word to see your class/country at the top of the leaderboard.
  • Win: INSEAD offers three vouchers that grant a full waiver for any of the INSEAD Open Online Programs. More information can be found in the Frequently Asked Question section.
  • Join: 2285 INSEAD people already joined this initiative, including INSEAD Board Members, faculty, staff and, of course, alumni.

More than 100 alumni gathered in person to learn and contribute at Station F in Paris, with more joining online, including those at a synchronized breakfast event at the SF Hub.  The program, sponsored in part by Loyal VC, featured INSEAD’s deep well of alumni expertise in sustainability issues.  Speakers addressed ESG regulations, AI risks and opportunities for carbon pollution reduction, and advances in shipping, air fuel and construction to crack emissions outside the direct control of a given business (Scope 3 emissions).

Shipping expert Pernille Dalhgaard, jet fuel expert Philippe Lacamp, and construction expert Dr. Andreas Claussen give lightning talks on Cracking Scope 3 at Station F, moderated by INSEAD COO Attila Cselotei.

Discussion groups aligned with sessions produced ideas for applying the learning to participants’ businesses and lives.  As a concrete step for the entire gathering we launched the ClimateHero Initiative, inviting all alumni to use this link to measure their carbon footprint as a base case for improving it.  Please join the initiative: Our business decisions are calculated; what about our personal ones? The event team thanks INSEAD professor Theos Evgeniou, COO Attila Cselotei and Dean Mark Stabile for their participation and support, and thanks co-promoters NAAs France, The Netherlands, UK, USA, and Global Clubs TechAlumni, Energy, International Directors Network, and Women in Business.  Event recording at this link.

ATTENTION ALL INDEVOR GLOBAL IMPACT NETWORK ALUMS! We have three openings for 3-year terms on our Executive Committee (ExCo) beginning January 2024 and are thrilled to open the nomination process October 1st. The ExCo is INDEVOR’s governing body with a total of 9 members from around the world, including several leaders of the Community Impact Challenge initiative, INDEVOR serves as host Global Club. We meet for 1 hour every two months and share the load leading events, including webinars and an annual Alumni Sustainability Summit.

To self-nominate, please fill out this form by November 15th. Our selection committee will review nominations and propose a slate of candidates for e-voting the week of December 4th. We are specifically looking to fill three roles:

  • INSEAD Climate Journey Liaison: We need someone familiar with INSEAD’s carbon footprint reduction commitments who is knowledgeable and curious about best practices in climate action. This role will keep INDEVOR updated on progress and alert to places that alumni voices can be helpful encouragers of the journey.  INDEVOR plans to weave INSEAD climate milestones across its learning and advocacy agenda.
  • NAA/GC Sustainability Reps Liaison: We have been organically building INDEVOR/Sustainability reps across National Alumni Associations and need someone with a vision for systematizing the network and info flows and event cross-promotions to and from NAAs.  This role would help develop a cross-NAA/Global Club (GC) advocacy agenda for sustainability learning and action.
  • Webinar Lead: Our learning agenda includes a bimonthly webinar series on social and environmental impact in collaboration with specific NAAs and Global Clubs (GCs).  This role will champion and facilitate webinars with our webinar administrator and NAA/ GC partners to create a repeatable approach to planning, promotion, implementation and feedback.

Above all, we seek leaders who are passionate and committed to mobilizing the INSEAD alumni community toward positive social and environmental impact to imbue our alums with sustainable life and work practices for people and planet. Many of our members are part of the Community Impact Challenge initiative. Many work in NGOs, CSR, impact investing, social entrepreneurship, international organizations, microfinance, while others are interested in bringing sustainable practices to their corporate workplaces.

As part of our vision, launched at INSEAD’s June 2023 Annual Volunteers Meeting, INDEVOR, with CIC as an action arm, serves as hub of a growing alumni sustainability network across NAAs and Global Clubs in alliance with the IAA and school (including the Hoffman Global Institute for Business and Society and INSEAD Climate Journey, and the INDEVOR student club – where it all began back in 1993.

Reflecting on CIC’s 4th Challenge
As we gear up for this exciting new challenge, let’s take a moment to celebrate the
achievements of our past participants in CIC’s 4th Challenge, which took place this past
summer. Here are some impressive statistics:

  • 139 enthusiastic participants joined forces.
  • Participants identified an average emission reduction of 10.6 tons, making strides in areas such as travel and transportation, as well as energy consumption in residential and commercial buildings.
  • A remarkable 30% of the 139 participants completed the challenge and earned a well-deserved certificate.
  • Volunteer facilitators played a vital role in moderating conversations across 7 WhatsApp groups and leading engaging weekly calls.

These numbers are a testament to the incredible impact that individuals can achieve when they come together with a shared purpose. Let’s make the StartNOW Oct 2023 Challenge even more impactful! Join us as we Learn, Act, and Connect towards a greener, more sustainable future. Together, we can make a world of difference.

5. Wake Up Call on Global Food Crisis – and Some Promising Solutions

INDEVOR had a terrific turnout and panel expertise at its September 26th webinar on “Investment and Action to Address Our Global Food Crisis” in collaboration with Community Impact Challenge. For the full recording access here!

For the highlights, read on:
We heard from Robin Millington (NAA UK) and CEO of Planet Tracker about six ways our food system is killing itself by spiking climate change, and we heard of six priority actions that food investors and consumers can take to turn it around – and profit.

We heard from James Stewart (NAA Australia/NZ) and cofounder of Always Carbon, about an engineered solution to advance regenerative agriculture: Biochar, and we heard from Philippe Dongier (NAA Canada), executive director of global NGO CECI, about a nature-based solution to advance regenerative agriculture: Biodiversity tagging and credits.

Finally, Maria Fedorova, from the Hoffman Global Institute for Business and Society spoke of INSEAD’s own climate journey and how they are influencing food systems by defaulting to vegetarian meals, lowering dairy and vetting suppliers.

We thank our attendees, who contributed insightful questions and commentary and our webinar co-promoters: Alumni Engagement, HGIBS, NAA Australia/NZ, NAA Canada, NAA US, NAA UAE and the Global Energy Club. As always, we invite you to join INDEVOR in galvanizing awareness, advocacy and action to advance sustainability for our work, communities and the planet.

INDEVOR Global Impact Network June 2023 Newsletter

NEWSLETTER

June 2023

Thanks to the small but mighty group of INDEVOR Global Impact Network Members who made our Annual General Meeting on June 10th.  We took care of the following business as the global “umbrella” club for engaging alumni and promoting events and resources around all things related to sustainability, a role that saw us formalize a tight collaboration with Community Impact Challenge (CIC) this year and spur a robust and growing membership:

  1. We voted unanimously to amend INDEVOR club’s charter to: focus on sustainable development – both social and environmental impact; collaborate closely with all INSEAD clubs and initiatives that care about sustainability; and explicitly invite NAAs and Global Clubs that want to formalize collaboration with INDEVOR to invite their members to join INDEVOR’s mailing list through MyINSEAD.  See amended Charter here.
  2. We ratified by large majority the appointments of Ebru Carter (Secretary), Ashish Agarwal (Treasurer) and Arnaud Bertrand (Community Impact Challenge Liaison) to the INDEVOR-GIC Executive Committee, all of whom are both CIC and INDEVOR members and have been filling critical ExCo roles that were vacated during COVID.
  3. We provided updates on our collaborations with: CIC on annual sustainability summit and StartNOW challenge, shared back office services and merger exploration; with student clubs and HGIBs on sustainability careers mentoring; and with NAAs & GCs on joint programming.
  4. We planned our late fall ExCo election to fill three seats vacating at year end and agreed election with be open to all members, with promotion across the INDEVOR/Sustainability reps within each NAA or Global Club to surface nominations.  Election date TBD in late November or early December.
  5. We brainstormed ideas for our May 2024 second annual Sustainable Business Summit and agreed it will start with a morning nature plunge in the Fontainebleau forest to ground ourselves in the stakes of biodiversity before we meet for panel discussions.  Please send more ideas to [email protected].
  6. Looking forward, this Saturday, we’ll co-sponsor a summer jobs/internships kiosk before and after HGIBS Summit (see below), and roll out more programming with NAAs, and other GCs on creating social and environmental impact, starting with our next webinar July 6th co-sponsored with NAA Brazil on using tech to eradicate poverty (See announcement below.)

June 17th
SUSTAINABILITY JOB/INTERNSHIP CORNER ON CAMPUS

HGIBS will celebrate 5 years of its Force for Good actions on Saturday 17th June from 2-6 pm in Fonty with panels (featuring some of our dear classmates) and a cocktail at the Château (line up here), and a jobs corner for sustainability internships and full-time roles for students, co-sponsored by INDEVOR global club and INDEVOR and Environment & Business student clubs.
