Managing the Dutch natural gas phase-out
The Dutch government wants all residential buildings to be off natural gas in 2050. The objective is to reduce CO2 emissions from the built environment. But how should this transition be managed? Should it be top-down or bottom-up? And what is the role of the public versus the private sector? What impact will energy policy choices have on the setup of our renewable energy system and therefore on how we heat our homes and buildings?
What can we learn from early pilots in which neighbourhoods are becoming gas-less? What practical hurdles were encountered at grass-roots level? Is a tailored approach required for each neighbourhood or can we use a scalable standard approach?
These and more questions will be addressed by 2 thought-provoking presenters who will reflect on the governance of the gas phase-out in the Dutch building sector.
