Professor’s Lecture with Stefan Thau – On Social Obligations & Trust
Wednesday 25 April at 7pm
Join us as Professor Stefan Thau reviews a number of research findings about the role of trust in social and organizational functioning.
The main claim is that trust, or the willingness to place one’s faith in the goodwill of others, is both the result of social obligations but also creates them, and in that way locks people in positions where they are either trusted or distrusted. Stefan will discuss the following questions:
How do professional obligations (e.g., to up-play the quality of company product and services) change the trust we are willing to place others and how do they change the trust people place in people employed in such professions? What is the role of trust in maintaining social divisions—for example those that exist between high and low status individuals? He will show data from controlled experiments and also larger-scale social surveys which help answering these questions. Stefan Thau is Professor of Organisational Behaviour at INSEAD and the Academic Director of the INSEAD’s mobile pop-up laboratory, Singapore Data Team (SiDaT).
Stefan completed his PhD in Behavioral and Social Sciences at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, and an MSc (German DiplPsych) in Psychology at the University of Mannheim, Germany. Prior to joining INSEAD, he was an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at the London Business School.
Stefan serves as an Associate Editor of Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes and as an editorial board member of the Academy of Management Journal and the Journal of Applied Psychology.
