The Pharma M&A Frenzy: Industry Insider View, April 15, 2015, Basel

Since the start of 2014 the global healthcare sector has seen $475bn of mergers and acquisitions. This represents a record level for the industry, higher even than the megamergers of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Almost $70bn in deals have been announced so far this year, the strongest start to a year in over a decade. Analysts and banker predict more to come but investors may be starting to ask tougher questions about valuations.

What is driving the M&A boom? Structural changes in the industry? A greater willingness to make clear choices? Cheap financing? Tax optimization? What will the future of the industry look like? Get the answers from Marvelle Sullivan Berchtold who is uniquely positioned as Novartis’ Global Head of M&A to provide analysis and an insider view. Novartis has recently completed multiple billion Swiss Franc deals to sharpen its focus. This included an innovative and complex asset swap with GSK which bankers called “an elegant set of transactions”.

Ms. Sullivan Berchtold is the Global Head of M&A for the Novartis Group. Since joining Novartis, she has represented the company in over $100 billion of transactions. Most recently, Marvelle led the Novartis Portfolio Transformation, which included the sale of Novartis Animal Health to Eli Lilly, the sale of Diagnostics to Grifols, the sale of the flu vaccines business to CSL (pending) and the three-part transaction with GSK (the acquisition of GSK’s oncology portfolio, the sale of Novartis ex-flu Vaccines business and the formation of the Consumer Health Joint Venture).

For the second year in a row, we invite INSEAD Alumni Association members and their partners to join for an evening with Wine-Tasting Apéro Riche followed by a visit to the Cully Jazz festival.

The Cully Jazz Festival is a unique event that brings world-renowned Jazz artists to the picturesque village of Cully. Our evening begins with an Apéro Riche & Wine-tasting in the village of Villette. Then we walk together to Cully through the scenic Lavaux vineyards. Arriving in Cully, you can choose from a range of free concerts taking place in the local wine cellars of Cully. There are also bigger concerts, which require tickets in advance, featuring Yilian Cañizares, GoGo Penguin or egopusher. We look forward to seeing you for an evening of great music and local tradition in good company!
