Digitized Democracy: Trends & Implications, featuring Costa Vayenas

We are delighted to host Costa Vayenas, author of Democracy in the Digital Age: How we’ll vote and what we’ll vote about,  at an evening conference for INSEAD alumni and members of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce in Zurich. Modern technology has the capacity to cause a profound change in democracy, says Costa Vayenas.

Until recently, very little change took place in the representative system since it was introduced in the late 1700’s. Now the system is starting to unravel. Revolutionary technology is poised to transfer more power directly to the people than ever before, including on the all-important questions of how the state taxes and spends.

Are today’s phenomena of populism and political volatility a cause or a result of disintermediation of democracy? Will Switzerland continue to be an island of stability? Where do these trends leave the United States? How might they impact China? By drawing on the evidence from diverse fields – politics, economics, finance and information technology, described in laymen’s terms, Costa unlocks original insights to these questions and where the trends might lead.  After the presentation, there will be an opportunity for networking over drinks and a delicious apéro riche.

Constantin “Costa” Vayenas is an experienced analyst who has worked in the financial centres in London, New York and Zurich.  The research for his new book is based on a careful analysis of the data and a deep understanding of the likely financial consequences of these trends.

Recently appointed to the Board of be-advanced, the Canton Bern’s new agency for promotion of industrial innovation, SME’s, and startups, Carole Ackermann is also CEO and co-founder of Diamondscull AG, a company investing in early stage companies in the technology/ICT field. She is also non-executive director of Allianz Suisse, Plaston Group and WMPartners, president of Business Angles Switzerland, co-president of Angel for ladies, jury member of Venturekick and top 100 startups. Her career has spanned consulting and management roles Prior to that she held consultant and international management roles at Interbrand, Arthur Andersen, SaurerGroup, among others. Carole Ackermann holds a PhD in marketing from the University of St. Gallen where she is senior lecturer for business administration.

Audemars Piguet is making available 10 exclusive VIP tickets (for a total of 20 guests). The package includes three parts: 1) meeting Audemars Piguet’s brand ambassadors at the exclusive VIP-only Collectors Lounge level for a drink and a 1-hour tour of the Audemars Piguet lounge, and 2) a one-hour guided tour in English of the Art Basel fair and 3) entrance to the art fair. Only 20 names will receive a link to register on XING, the other applicants names will be captured on a waiting list in the event of cancellations.
