Aug 18 Charity Bike Ride and Picnic on Lake of Zurich

Dear Alumni,

Join us on Saturday August 18, 2018 for another sporty alumni social event with an impact! This time it is a bike ride followed by a picnic (get together) on the shore of the Lake of Zurich. Have fun and help us buy bikes for misfortunate street children in the care of Association du Foyer de l’Enfant Libanais, a Lebanon-based NGO that takes care of abused, abandoned and orphaned kids!

Charity Bike Ride and Picnic on Lake of Zurich
Saturday August 18, 2018
Alumni and friends will be riding our bikes around Zurich to raise money to contribute to the purchase of 20 bikes (target USD 5000) for street children in the current care Association du Foyer de l’Enfant Libanais (AFEL) in Lebanon. The registration fee of CHF 35 will be used to purchase bikes for the kids.

You can also donate without participating, giving either CHF 20 or CHF 60, or both, by buying  “Donation” tickets.

The prevalence of children living or working in the streets is a persistent challenge that straddles larger socioeconomic and political issues in Lebanon. A recent study concluded that there are four driving factors that cause children to live or work on the streets of Lebanon: social exclusion, vulnerability of households, the influx of Syrian refugees into Lebanon, as well as organized crime and exploitation of children. The children to whom the bikes will be donated are in the care of AFEL. They come from backgrounds of abuse, trauma and neglect and have not had many chances to engage in fun activities as other children do. As President John Kennedy famously said, “Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride”. These activities are pure and simple fun. Most importantly, they will benefit the kids’ mental health and learning and provide them with moments of happiness that will help them rise above their current circumstances

More about the project
We aim to collect money (target 5,000 USD or more) to buy bikes and recreational sports equipment for abandoned children
Many of those children who come to those NGOs are street children who are forced, usually by their family or child labor ringleaders, to beg or steal in order to bring in money. A new film shown at the Cannes film festival this year documents the story of one such child. See film trailer on Youtube

Others, come from even more heart-rending situations, such as sex trafficking. More information about the situation of street kids in Lebanon is available in a Unicef study
