The INSEAD Alumni Association invited Bill Coen, the recently appointed Secretary General of the Basel Committee for Banking Supervision (BCBS), to speak to Alumni and guests in October 2014. The audience, which hailed from a range of industries, engaged unreservedly with the affable American economist who spoke without props or Powerpoint at the old-style Grand Hotel les Trois Roi in Basel. The Basel Committee is a working group inside the Basel-based Bank for International Settlements (BIS). It sets global standards for banking solvency and liquidity.

This year Switzerland topped the “Global Innovation Index” for the fourth time, according to INSEAD, Cornell University, and the World Intellectual Property Organization. Just how Switzerland, and in particular, the Canton Ticino, can maintain the pole position was the topic of the first event by the Ticino Chapter of the Swiss INSEAD Alumni Association,

The evening conference, entitled Ticino and Switzerland: Attractiveness and Competitiveness in an Increasingly Global World, attracted 110 business executives, investors, politicians, and entrepreneurs to Leopold Lugano. The feature speakers were Theo Vermaelen, INSEAD Professor of Finance and UBS Chair in Investment Banking, Sergio P. Ermotti, Group Chief Executive Officer of UBS AG and Bravofly Rumbo Group founder, Fabio Cannavale. Lino Terlizzi, editor of Corriere del Ticino, and Stefano Rizzo of the Ticino Department of Finance and Economy.

The region’s basic business environment was discussed, threats to it, and ways to develop it. The resonance from the event was positive and is expected to lay the foundation for partnerships for growth. Organized by INSEAD Alumnus Roberto Italia, Senior Advisor to Cinven and CEO of Space SpA, the event was sponsored by UBS, Cornèr Bank, and Bravofly Rumbo Group.

The INSEAD Alumni Association of Switzerland welcomes members and special guests to an evening conference about investing in hotel property, featuring two panel discussions with leading industry insiders. The “Prestige and Profit: Global Hotel Property Investment Insights” conference will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Zunfthaus zur Zimmerleuten in Zürich.
The hotel and lodging sector is proving to be one in which prestige and profit are not necessarily mutually exclusive. There is an increasing level of private capital, equity and debt financing underway, driven by renewed investor confidence and pent-up demand. You are invited to an evening conference and networking cocktail featuring INSEAD professor of Strategy, Laurence Capron, co-author of Build, Borrow, or Buy: Solving the Growth Dilemma (Harvard Business Review Press), an award-winning book that examines how companies can select and balance different modes of growth: organic growth (build), licensing and alliances (borrow) and M&A (buy) to outperform.

The event will focus on healthcare companies. Laurence Capron’s research suggests that the pharmaceutical industry is pretty well-balanced in terms of its ability to mix and match different modes of growth, and this bodes well for its future.
