Artificial Intelligence is a transformative technology reshaping all industries, with financial services being no exception. In fact, AI technologies have been utilised in fraud and risk management for over 15 years. Recently, AI, including Generative AI (GenAI), has advanced significantly in both capability and adoption, becoming central to a wave of innovation sweeping through the banking sector.

Beyond the operational efficiencies provided by AI chatbots for customer support and internal task augmentation, banks globally are piloting and deploying AI for complex task automation, personalisation, and functional improvements. This pervasive change affects all levels of organisations, with some players even deploying AI advisors at the board level.

However, this opportunity comes with challenges, including concerns about fairness and bias, the impact on existing organisational structures, and the materiality of return on investment given the substantial capital expenditures on platforms and training, as well as operating expenses such as the energy consumption required to deploy AI solutions.
