Henry Engelhardt (MBA 88J) is the Co-founder and former CEO of Admiral Group. Since its inception, Admiral has been an innovator and disruptor which has transformed the motor insurance business and has become one of Britain’s most valuable companies. Henry’s book Think Lead Succeed is a terrific combination, being part memoir, part management philosophy, and part practical manual which helps managers and leaders to think creatively, make smarter decisions, and manage people better. One of Henry’s philosophies is that, “When people like what they do, they’ll do it better.” In this compelling Doriot lecture Henry will talk about building a staff that love challenges, pull together, and succeed as a team.
Following INSEAD, Henry was, very briefly, a management consultant and then became the first marketing and sales manager at Churchill Insurance. He left Churchill in 1991 to set up what became Admiral Group. Admiral launched in 1993, Henry led a management buyout of the business in 1999 and Admiral went public in 2004. In 2007 it joined the FTSE 100, the only Welsh company to be in this select group. Admiral now has more than 5 million customers and a market cap of nearly £10 billion.
Henry is an Independent non-executive Director of the Welsh Rugby Union and a trustee of the family charity, The Moondance Foundation. He now spends his time mentoring, lecturing and travelling. He and his wife live in Cardiff, Wales and are occasionally visited by their four adult children.
