Manon Lescaut
Opera Holland Park
Friday 7 June

This event is supported by Opera Holland Park

Join us for a magical early summer night at the opera. We will sit under an outdoor canopy, set against the stunning backdrop of the ruins of the historic Holland House, for the spectacle of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut performed by the renowned Opera Holland Park Chorus and the City of London Synfonia. Prior to the performance, we will enjoy an exclusive reception indoors with Charles Mackay CBE (MBA 69), Chair of the opera’s trustees.

Premiered in Turin in 1893, Giacomo Puccini’s adaptation turned a sentimental narrative into an operatic sensation. Four episodes of ensnarement and escape trace the affair between Manon and Des Grieux from Amiens to Paris, and Le Havre to Louisiana, with a stunning intermezzo for strings. In the cruel and glorious opera that made Puccini’s name, a convent girl becomes a courtesan, then a convict, forever unable to choose between a life of luxury and a life of love.
