Product Games: Step into the Shoes of a Product Manager and Conquer Real-world Challenges!

BACKGROUND

This year, the TMT Club and digital@INSEAD have partnered with Grab, Southeast Asia’s leading superapp, to bring Product Games participants closer to real-world innovation. Grab will play an active role in mentoring finalist teams, offering valuable industry insights and guidance throughout the competition.

Beyond the learning experience, the winning team will receive an invitation to the final interview round for an applicable internship program at Grab, along with a meet-and-greet opportunity with Grab’s senior management. To top it off, the champions will also take home a cash prize of USD 10,000.

COMPETITION DETAILS

Problem statement

Reimagine Essential Access: Build the Next Vertical with Grab.
How can Grab’s powerful multi-sided ecosystem (drivers, merchants, logistics, payments) revolutionize access to critical everyday services for millions in Southeast Asia? We challenge you to design a sustainable, scalable and user-centric new vertical that bridges significant access gaps, demonstrating strategic innovation and deep market understanding.

Key Considerations for Your Proposal:

  • Feasibility: Is the proposed solution practical to implement within Grab’s operational context?
  • Frequency of Use: Does the service address a recurring need, ensuring sustained engagement?
  • Ecosystem Fit: How well does the new vertical integrate with and leverage Grab’s existing assets and network?
  • Regulatory Risks: What potential regulatory hurdles exist, and how can they be mitigated?
  • Potential for Public-Private Partnerships: Are there opportunities to collaborate with government bodies or NGOs to enhance impact and scalability?

Bonus Considerations

  • How existing ecosystem actors (e.g., drivers, merchants) could play new roles.
  • How AI and/or autonomous vehicles could enable more efficient operations.

The Challenge

In teams of 2-5 people, you are invited to develop a product that addresses a specific challenge or set of challenges (see problem statement). Your proposal should clearly define the problem and demonstrate how your product effectively addresses it, contributing to future solutions. The product, whether tangible or intangible, must be validated through user research and provide a clear pathway to empowering and supporting innovative solutions. Teams are not required to integrate AI, but if you do, responsible use will be part of the judging.

Evaluation criteria

Product Concept and Design

  • Clearly articulate the product and the specific challenge it addresses.
  • Highlight critical functions and features tailored to specific user needs.
  • Define the user journey with a deep understanding of user needs.
  • Emphasize user-friendly design and seamless user experience.
  • Validate the concept through user testing, prototyping, or similar methods.

Business Acumen

  • Clearly identify and segment the target audience.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of budgetary and resource constraints, with clear mitigation strategies.
  • Address risks and trade-offs associated with scaling up.
  • Define clear KPIs and success metrics to measure product performance.

Product Display

  • Present the product concisely, adhering to time constraints.
  • Provide a vivid and detailed product presentation, including prototypes, mock designs, or 3D models to showcase the product effectively.

Your submission - Presentation guidelines

  • Initial Presentation

Please submit your initial presentation in PDF format (10 pages maximum, incl. cover slide).

If your team is selected for the finals, your final presentation should include a live demo, mock design, or any other format that brings your product to life. Videos, especially in a Kickstarter style, are highly recommended to enhance your presentation.

  • Focus on the user

Whether for the initial presentation or the final round, prioritize the user. The judges want to understand the user’s thoughts and feelings about the challenges you’re addressing and their feedback on your product. Please include user research in your presentation.
