With VC investments slowing and entrepreneurs struggling to stay afloat, is there another route into entrepreneurship? The panel will discuss their experience of management buy-ins (MBIs) and management buy-outs (MBOs) and how these options are often overlooked, yet offer the entrepreneur an equally rewarding and exciting journey.

 

Ed Lane is a Managing Associate at Harbottle & Lewis where advises founders, businesses and investors on a broad range of corporate, corporate finance and commercial matters. He has extensive experience in mergers & acquisitions, fundraises from pre-seed to Series A and beyond, start-ups, growth equity investments, public takeovers, joint ventures. He trained and qualified at Linklaters LLP, where he spent five and a half years in the private equity M&A team acting for a variety of private equity houses and businesses on leveraged and non-leveraged buy-outs, growth equity investments, exits, management incentive arrangements and bolt-on acquisitions.

 

Claire Madden is Managing Partner of Connection Capital, a private client investment business specialising in alternative investments. Having started her career as a private equity investor at 3i, Claire launched a private client investment business in 2002 which she sold out from in 2009 before co-founding Connection Capital in 2010. Connection Capital is an active investor in the UK SME private equity market specialising in MBOs and growth capital investments. Given her time in the industry, Claire has extensive experience of the challenges and opportunities the buy-out market can bring to both investors and management teams.

 

Simon Webster is an entrepreneur by background who raised the first search fund outside of North America. The fund enabled Simon to acquire RSL in 1995 and he became the chief executive. Over a 10-year period Simon built the organisation by around 10x, sales of £3.5m to £30m through both organic growth and acquisitions. Simon delivered top quartile returns for his investors. Simon now lectures on this topic at LBS. He is also a part-time lecturer at Judge Business School and an Entrepreneur in Residence at INSEAD.
